Firewood, Fallen Branches and First Storms: October Jobs in the South Hams
September 18, 2026
There is a moment every autumn when the South Hams turns its attention indoors. The patio is done or it isn’t, the garden is winding down, and the evenings belong to the inside of the house again. For the trades it is renovation season proper; for homeowners it is the run of jobs that make a house pleasant to spend a winter in. Older South Hams properties — thick-walled, character-rich, and in no hurry to dry out — reward the right equipment more than most.
Start with the heating, not the paint
The most valuable autumn job is the least glamorous one. If your radiators were patchy last winter — hot at the top, cold at the bottom, one room that never warms — the system is sludged, and no amount of bleeding will fix it. A Central Heating Power Flush machine (from £70 excl. VAT) cleans the whole circuit properly in a day. Do it before the heating season starts and you go into winter with a system that actually delivers what the boiler is paying for. Swapping a radiator or valve while you are at it? A Pipe Freeze kit (from £20) lets you work without draining the system.
Winning the war on damp
Damp is the defining condition of the older Devon house in winter, and autumn is when to get ahead of it. A dehumidifier (small from £35, large from £46) run hard for a week or two now — especially in the rooms that struggled last year — takes the stored summer moisture out of walls and furnishings before the condensation season begins. If you are plastering, the same machine is what gets fresh plaster dry in autumn conditions; pair it with an Electric Space Heater (2.8kW, from £12) for gentle background warmth rather than direct blasting, which cracks a fresh skim.
Decorating in the damp months
Autumn and winter decorating has a reputation it does not quite deserve — some decorators actively prefer it, because dust and pollen are down and the light is honest. The catch is moisture and temperature. Emulsion and gloss both cure badly in a cold, humid room: paint stays soft, drips form, and that faint bloom on new gloss is condensation getting into the film as it dries. The answer is the same pairing as the plastering: background heat to keep the room in the mid-teens and a dehumidifier to hold the air dry while coats go off. You will get crisper finishes and, usefully, you can close the windows — which in a Devon November is not a small thing.
Order of operations matters in a winter renovation generally: heating system first, then the wet trades (plaster, screed), then drying, then decoration. Every year we see it attempted in reverse, and it is always the paint that pays.
The messy jobs, mechanised
Autumn renovation means mixing — plaster, screed, self-levelling compound, tile adhesive — and a Paddle Mixer (from £15) mixes all of them better and faster than an arm and a stick. For tiling a kitchen or bathroom, the Battipav bridge saw (from £80) makes clean work of porcelain and stone. Working in the gloomier corners of a renovation, a Plasterers Light (from £10) shows you the wall you are actually finishing, not the one the shadows suggest.
And when the dusty phase ends, our cleaning equipment — industrial vacuums and carpet cleaners — gets the house back from the builders, whether the builders were hired or were you.
A word for holiday lets and second homes
The South Hams has a particular autumn rhythm: the season winds down, the changeover pressure eases, and owners of holiday lets get their one clear run at the property before Christmas bookings and the spring ramp-up. It is the window for exactly the jobs above — a power flush so the reviews never mention a cold bedroom, a fortnight of dehumidification in a coastal property that has been breathing sea air and wet towels since Easter, carpets properly cleaned rather than surface-vacuumed. A week of hired kit in October is cheap insurance against the February review that mentions damp. If you manage several properties, talk to us about scheduling deliveries across them in one run.
Delivered to the job, timed to the job
A note for South Hams customers: our Ivybridge site is a delivery yard and office rather than a walk-in counter, so the easy route is a phone call — 01752 922535 — or an email to hire@olympushiresouthhams.co.uk, and we will bring the kit to Ivybridge, Modbury, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Yealmpton or wherever the project is. Collection is always welcome at our Newton Abbot store. Browse the full Tool Hire range to plan the winter’s work — then put the kettle on. This is the season for it.
